After Evan Spiegel unveiled Specs from the AWE conference stage earlier this month, several questions were sparked. After all, there’s only so much one can cover in a product launch. Fortunately, we got the chance to ask those questions in an AWE panel discussion.
Meant to go a few layers deeper, the panel – moderated by AR Insider Editor Mike Boland – dove into the why and how of Specs. Why did Snap make the design choices it did? That includes a fully-dimensional UX, as the rest of the AR world moves towards toned-down visual UX.
After that decision, hundreds of downstream decisions await… and they’re all difficult tradeoffs. We’re talking specs like standalone versus tethered processing, optical see-through (OST) versus video passthrough (VPT), and the laundry list of brightness, resolution, field of view, etc.
The panel batted around these questions in the context of Snap’s goals… and how those goals translate to the end product that now enters the market. Check out the full video below and stay tuned for more commentary on Specs as the device’s Fall release gets closer.
